It is often the case that people don’t even consider bird insurance. Many types of pet insurance such as cat and dog insurance are incredibly common but bird insurance, not really.

However if you own a pet bird it has to have the same treatment with a vet if it becomes ill that a cat or dog does and this means you would benefit from having bird insurance.

A common assumption is that because birds are so small generally not a lot that can go wrong and if it does it won’t cost much to put right. Well, there is a lot that can go wrong and it does cost a lot to put right and as you will realise, it is possible to become really attached to a bird and it would be terrible if you could not afford the medical treatment that would be required.

If you have an exotic pet bird the it might be wise to consult a specialist for your insurance needs but any other type of bird can be insured by using one of the insurance comparison websites on the internet or by asking your vet which one they would recommend. If the bird has had previous health problems be sure to make that known. It will increase the price of the premiums but if you kept quiet and the bird became ill all cover may generally become null and void should the insurer find out, and believe it or not, they probably will.

If you ask your vet to recommend bird insurance they may offer you a very expensive policy so be sure to look around first. If you have dealt with vets in the past you will be aware that this is how they typically operate.

Don’t put an excess on this insurance that is to high because if you do you will find that any minor treatment comes in below this so you will end up paying for the policy but not receiving any of the benefits.

If you are on any kind of social security benefits you could find that you are allowed to receive free or discounted bird insurance at some vets, Ask the vet if they offer anything like this or take a search in the yellow pages or the internet.
