*The first two figures refer to bodily injury liability limits (which are not required in all states) and the third figure refers to the property damage liability limit. For example, 20/40/10 means $20,000 per person injured in an accident, $40,000 per accident, and $10,000 for property damage. These coverages cover the other person. These state minimums are based on the most current information available. In addition, some states are "no-fault" states which additionally require Personal Injury Protection, a.k.a. PIP, this pays for reasonable and necessary medical expenses regardless of fault. You should double check your specific state's requirements to verify these figures.

Should I buy more than the minimum?

That depends, you have more in financial assets than what your state requires. For example, let's take California, the state minimum liability is 15/30/5. $15,000 per person/$30,000 per accident for injuries to the other person. And only $5000 for property damage to the other person's car. If you cause a minor accident and only cause $10,000 worth of injuries then you have enough coverage.

But next time, let's say you cause a 3 car pile-up and send a van full of kids to the hospital. The bills all total $60,000 for bodily injury and $25,000 for property damage.

You don't have enough insurance. But, you do have money in a stock account, you have 3 houses, and 3 cars. You could be forced to sell off your assets to pay for these claims.

The moral of the story is you want to have enough insurance to protect yourself in the event you are sued. If you have $300,000 in assets, you should have as much if not more than that in insurance. You may also want to look into a personal umbrella policy.
